Janmashtami is a very enthusiastic festival celebrated all over India on the occasion of Krishna's birthday, Shravan Vad Aatham Tithi (Krishna Paksha). It is also known as Krishnajanmotsav. [1] This annual Hindu festival is celebrated as the birthday of the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, Shri Krishna. The festival falls every year in the month of August or September according to the Gregorian calendar. Krishna temples around the world, including Dwarka and Mathura, have a grand celebration of Krishna Janmotsav on the night of Janmashtami and Aarti, worship programs.
On this day people decorate Gokuliyu at home and celebrate Krishnajanmotsav with various dishes. On the eighth day, at the time of Krishna's birth, i.e. till 12 o'clock in the night, they fast and from the next morning onwards, groups of Govindas go out for Matki Fod. Sometimes for the sake of procreation or sometimes in the joy of procreation. It is considered auspicious to keep a piece of broken clay in the treasury. Prizes are also kept for Matki Fod in big cities.
According to Hindu incarnation and Bhagavata Purana, Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. He is the son of Vasudeva and Devaki. Shravan Vad Aatham is said to have been born in a prison in Mathura at midnight, and soon after his father crossed the Yamuna (river) and placed Nandrai and Yashoda in Gokul.
